Photoshoot

For my film magazine and film poster i had organised a photo shoot in the studio in the media centre and sunderland university. When we arrived we got time to get changed and do hair and makeup. I dressed her in old fashioned style clothes, and done her hair and makeup along the same style. I picked two images from the ones i shot and chose two final ones which i edited for the front of my magazine. I done the same with my film poster but my photoshoots were at seperate times for each one.

My Magazine Photoshoot

My edited final image.

I chose to use this image for my film magazine as it is the most suitable image. The model looks straight into the camera engaging the audiences attention. Also the image is a medium shot meaning you can see the clothing and the characters positioning gives her a good shape. I like in this image how you can see the matching jewellery which shows the audience a lot about the film such as the style and time set of the film. i also find that this image was the most professional out of all the images for the front cover of a magazine as its neat and simple yet very effective.

My Film Poster Photoshoot

My Final edited  image.

I chose to use this image as it was most suitable for a film poster and looked the most like my inspirational texts. I love the way they are looking into each others eyes and look madly in-love with each other which was the aim for my photos when taking the images. i also like the clothing on the grey  back ground which will allow other factors of my film poster to stand out. Things such as film title and credits etc. The image also looks very professional and effective but very simple just like my magazine image. I chose this one from the other images as it is the image where they look the most in-love and also the one where they look the happiest.

Looking at other students work

To help us with our products our teachers thought it would be a good idea to look at other students work to get an idea of what to expect when making our products. Underneath is my feedback on some students work. Looking the other students worked really helped me wih my productss as i took from it the postive and negative things to do when creating my magazine and film poster.

Feedback Sheet – Student Work

Please refer to photography, colour, layout, font style, framing and cropping as well as font style and actual text in your response.

Please remember to be constructive in your criticism as this is work by students – not professional s

Name of product
What I thought were the strengths
What I thought were the weaknesses
Sinster- film magazine
For this product I loved the image and thought it was perfect for the genre of the film magazine. The lighting was just right and the makeup used sets the mood well. The image being in black and white also makes it look very effective. The main title of the magazine I thought was also very good. The colour made it stand out on a darker part of the image and the font fit in well and looked spooky. I liked the use of the corner box with the red back ground as it stands out well on the magazine. I think this magazine would have got a grade B.
I thought the colours used for the text on the magazine didn’t stand out enough on the image. I think they if the colours were changed and maybe repositioned then the product would have looked a lot more professional. Also the two mini images on the main image didn’t stand out very well at all. It would have been a lot better if the images had a border around them making them stand out more.
Infensus- film poster
For this product I think the top image used was very effective and appropriate for the genre of the film. You can tell the genre of the film by the poster which is a good sign. I think the main title text and quote. I also think the credit box looked very professional which is a key element to a film poster. I like the effect used to blend the two images that are used together. I think this magazine would have got a grade C.
I think the bottom image didn’t fit in with the genre of film. For example you need the rest of the poster to know it’s an image for a horror poster. The poster Is also missing important conventions to a film poster such as actor’s names and release date.  I feel the poster would benefit more it just used the one image instead of two.
Under Rogue- film poster
I like the colours used for the title in the poster. The two colours go well together. I think the credit box also looks very professional which is a good thing. I think this magazine would have got a grade D.
The full image isn’t very good for a film poster. The full poster in my opinion is two spacious and is not portrait like most professional posters. Also there isn’t any proper realise date, actors names, ratings or anything apart from the title and credit box. The image isn’t edited or thought about I think. Also the man in the back of the image I thought was a person passing by not an actual part of the image so that needed to be made clearer.

Film Magazine

For my film magazine i started looking at insperational texts. I wanted to base my film magazine on the famous 'Empire' magazine. I like the layout, style, image and colour use used in these products. The top image was the main style i wanted to use for my magazine. I like the colour of the back ground and light use on the face. I wanted to use the same lighting use om my product becuase although it is really dark, the story line behind my trailer also is meaning the magazine would portay the story line slightly. I also like the colour red used in the title as i feel this would stand out on what ever image as long as it wasnt all red.

WORKING ON MY FILM MAGAZINE

After looking more into professional film magazine's such as Total Film and Empire Film magazine i realised using pink as the colour for  my magazine name didn't look professional and using the pink made it look like a girly fashion magazine instead of a film magazine. I preferred using a bigger and bolder font as it looked a lot more professional which is what i wanted.

The Final Product

For my final product i decided i only wanted two main colours on my poster these being black and red. This made my magazine look more professional, believable and more like a film magazine instead of a girly fashion magazine. For my final product I decided to add a gradient to the background of my magazine as most of the insperational texts i looked at didnt have plan backgrounds and the ones that did, didnt look as legit as the rest so i decided adding a back ground would help improve my magazine. I really like my final product amd enjoyed doing it!

My Improved Film Magazine From Feedback

Film Poster

The font.

For the font for my main title and rest of the text i want the font to be in the style of the notebooks font, like the rest of my products. I used the website 'Da Font' To look at themes like the style of the notebook.

I came up with some ideas of fonts. The first one i Found was the one below which was called 'Romance-Fatal-Sherif'. I liked this font as it looks quite old fashioned and suited the style of my poster. Although i liked this font i carried on looking at other just to have other fonts i could use.

I then googled fonts similar to the notebook. I found a font called ' SG Largo SB Light'. This was Extremely similar to the notebook so i thought this font was perfect. I deicded to use this font.

Working on my poster.

I changed my font to look more professional and to fit in more with the genre of my film. I also thought it fit in well the layout of my what I wanted my poster to look like.

I changed the layout of my poster I felt there was going to be to much going on all at once therefore the audiences main focus wouldnt be on the main image, especially if there were two. I feel that my new layout which you can see on the 'New Flat Plans' post will really help me achieve a higher grade.

Photos for my film poster

I decided that i would use the bottom image for my poster. Working on my poster was quite difficult as i had problems finding colours to stand out on the clothing i had chosen for my models to wear. I chose this clothing as it suited my style for my trailer so it was appropriate. I enjoyed doing my poster although it isnt yet finished.

This is my poster so far. The issues i have been having is making my creidts stand out against the clothing. I still have a lot of changes which need to be made but this is the basic layout for my poster. I really like my imge it is very sutibale for my trailer. The idea behind my quote is to never give up which is the moral behind my trailer. I changed my mind from my previous flat plans as i feel just having the one image would be much more effective and look a lot more professional. I photoshopped my image to make the female character whiter as this fits in with the cancer side to my film. I didnt want this issue to be made obvious through out my film poster or magazine.

Facebook page

As part of my research for my trailer i had to create a facebook page to let my particpants taking part in my project know everything they needed to know to do with filming etc. I called my facebook page Jazz Film Productions. Underneath is my proof of my facebook page.

I invited people who were involved in my film to my page as they were the ones who would need to be kept up to date with all the information. Friends started giving me feeback on my page straight away.

Story Boards

A story board is a visual representation of what my trailer is going to look like using shot types and camera angles. The story board is used to help on set and used to visualise what the film is going to look like. Its almost like a plan which you use before you film it.

Story boards need to include :

  • the location
  • how many actors are in the shot
  • any important props or vehicles
  • costumes
  • Movement of actors,props, vehicles
  • lighting
  • shot types
  • shot angles

Underneath is a example of a story board from the famous and popular film Harry potter.

For my own story board i made my own grid in which i am getting ready to start planning. I used some feedback from my teacher after he had read my script to start me off with my storybaord. I realised how detailed my story board had to be.

Here is my story board for my trailer. It is very simple but very helpful when i will be filming my trailer.

Between my shots I will use the transition 'Crossfade'. This will allow my trailer to flow smoothly. I want my trailer to have quite a fast pace meaning the duration of most of my clips wont be longer that 2 or 3 seconds as I want to keep it fast paced to keep the audience engaged. This will also help reflect the story line. The sound behind the clips will just be my music choices as I only want to keep the sound on my important clips like the doctor scences as they are very important. The rest of the sound will just involve my 3 music choices and my voice overs telling the narrative.

Logo

Before starting to design my company logo I research other well known film companys and looked at how they were sucsessful and and what I liked about them. I did this for Universal and Dream Works.

I think that universal is a sucsessful film logo as the actual logo reflects the name. For example the word universal is place on a universe. I also the colours are linked in together and quite dark which makes the main writing clearly stand out.

I think that Dream Works logo is sucsessful and works for the same sort of reason as universal. The fact that the image on the logo fits in with the actual name of dream works. Also I think as its so plain and simple this helps it look so effective.

Looking at these logos helped me with mine and gave me the idea that I wanted to keep it quite simple. You can see my progress on my logo below.

For my logo i wanted something original and different. I came up with "Jazz Film Productions". I chose this as this is my old nickname from school and means something to me and obviously i cam the one creating my trailer so it made sense to me to call my company this name.

Working on my logo:

ideas for my logo
I tried to think of things associated with the word jazz. I thought of starts which is why i have the above image. I designed it on photosho my self and wanted to included the heart as i wanted it to have a side of romance to it.

progress of my logo on photoshop

Doing my logo helped me improve my skills on photoshop. I chose the font i did as i thought it looked good with the name i had chosen to call my company.

my finished logo

This is my finished logo. I decided to delete the star from my logo as it didnt look professional. I then decided to keep the romance theme to my company to colour the heart in the 'a' pink and add a very small silluette of two people kissing. You cant see this on this image but if you click on it and make it bigger it becomes visable. Over all i am very happy with my logo and will be using it in my trailer.
