Deconstructions

This is my deconstruction of the romance films. I chose this films as they were in the same genre as my film trailer and i wanted to do deconstructions like this so i could get idea's from the other posters for things such as styles, layout and image ideas.

Film Poster deconstructions.

Deconstructed Film Trailers.

Now is good

Now is good is a film about a 17 year old girl who has cancer. She creates a bucket list and the film is mainly about her doing everything on this list. The editing in now is good caught my eye. The clip opens with a really up beat music and the audience is automatically drawn in as we don't know what the film is about straightaway. This makes the audience wonder about the narrative. The music makes you feel like its going to be a film about gangs or something along them lines. The lighting at the beginning is very bright and colorful but changes toward the end when we find out the twist to the tradgic love story.  I also like the use of text which tells the story through out the trailer. The music is very rebellious at the beginning when we see Tessa ( main character) doing all the illegal things but this changes to a lot softer music towards as the trailer progresses as the story gets a lot softer an calmer.  The duration of the shot changes towards the begining of the trailer sets the pace of the trailer demonstrating how quick she is living the last moments of her life. The mise en scence is very believeable and allows the audience to relate to the characters as the setting and costumes are just like a normal persons everyday life. This will help make the trailer more realistic and believeable. The director Ol Parker uses a wide range of close up shots to show the viewers the characters emotions. The director tells the story well through out the trailer and leaves the audience on the edge of there seat wanting to see the full film.

The Last Song.

The use of an establishing shot at the very begining of the trailer automatically tells the audience the setting and location of the film.  The voice over of reading a letter out and what the voice over actually says again helps quickly set the narrative in the trailer. We find out very quickly that the mother and father have split up. We also have the typical idea of a young boy who loves his dad and a typical girl who loves her mother and is rebelling against everything. This once again is a realistic story line and makes the audience believe the trailer.  The change into upbeat music when we see the couple meeting is effective as we realise these are the two main characters and the story is focussed on these two.  The fast changes in shots towards the end helps build up the pace along with the build up in music. The way lighting  is used is very effective as it tells us a story. The lighting when the love story is on screen is very bright showing us its a happy situation where as the lighting is much darker and dull when on the family showing us that this could be where the drama lies. The use of text also telling us the story and the voice over telling  us the release dates is used through out the trailer. There is plenty of cuts and quick changes. I like how some of the shots fade also. I also like how they have interpreted Miley Cyrus's talent of singing into the trailer using her actual song as one of the films soundtracks.

Dear john

At the begining we see the two main characters meet and we get the idea straight away that it is a love story. We know this by the use of close ups and medium shots and the body language and facial expressions that we see. I like the use of lighting through out this trailer. The bright lighting in the earlier part of the trailer represents the happy relationship that at the moment is going perfectly, this sooner changes to darker lighting when the issue/tradedy comes across. This is a typical conventional story line of a the romance genre. The music used is quite slow gives a good rhythm to the trailer. I like use of  the voice over through out telling us the story. The use of a soft tone in the sound in the voice overs makes the audience feel happy and relaxed setting a good mood. The colours stay quite bright portraying the happy side and the lightening darkens and music changes when theme changes to sadness. In the trailer you see the main characters and get an idea of what there chatacter is like and how the are going to act through-out the film. The use of texts screens breaks up the trailer but these also fit in nicely which the theme of the trailer. The trailer picks up a very fast pace towards the end of the trailer. This helps demonstrate the story line. The mise en scene is very believeable and creates a believeable and realistic story line.

Film Magazine Deconstructions

The title of the magazine is so iconic that the image on the front of the magazine is able to cover some of the title and people are still aware of what the magazine is. The font is sans-serif so that it is clear and easy to read. The red colour stands out on the light background and contrasts well. The colour scheme is mainly red and black and then the colours of the main image which is colours connoting mystery. The main image dominates the page taking up almost the full length of the page. The character is highlighted with a white light making him clear and easy to see.  The main image has a correct eye line and Is looking into readers eyes. The fact his face is very serious makes the audience wonder what he is thinking about and leaves us on suspense until we read the magazine article. The big bold main sell line for the film automatically gives the new film attention and makes it stand out in a bright yellow text on the dark background. The use of the words ‘fantastic exclusive’ is used to really sell the new film to readers. The poster has the key elements to it such as barcode, release date and issue number. The red plus sign on the left hand side of the page tells us that there is more information along with the main story and cover lines. The use of red and white fonts creates a contrast within itself and stands out against the image. The back ground colour is very dark making everything else which is in bright colours stand out.

The poster mentions other films as to engage with a wider audience other than just those who are interested in the film public enemies. The cover also uses buzz words such as ‘first look’ and ‘on-set exclusive’ this gives the audience the feel that by buying this magazine they are getting new gossip that is not being published anywhere else. The image of Johnny Depp influence fans of his to buy the magazine, to see the movie so both companies will make a profit from the use of his image. It also attracts a male audience due to the mis en scene (costume and props) giving the genre of the film, gangster/crime. The image also attracts the female audience, because he looks powerful and really attractive. The constant theme of red in the text shows the audience violence and death. The image also has a grey smoke around it as well as the text being a grey colour. The colour grey is associated with depression and loss; this interlinks with the image of the gun the hard look on the characters face and the red for destruction and death. The title is in bold and is in its traditional red, showing loyalty for the people who buy the magazine and also makes it easily recognizable

The first and the most interesting effect used on this magazine cover is the intelligent use of lighting to create a dark feel surrounding the image. This effect is used to great success on the face of the main character, the left side of his face, which has very little blood or cuts on it, is illuminated by the light. On the other side of his face there is signifantly less lighting, his face damaged with custs and bruises and the right lense on his glasses is smashed. This contrast in lighting on each side of his face shows that the character may have two sides to his personality, a light side and a dark side.
The second interesting effect used on the front cover regarding lighting is the light in the top right corner of the page, the lighting is coming from a source above the character and shining down onto his head. This gives the impression that there is someone or something looking down on him, similarly this could connotate god looking down on him as ‘The chosen one’.On the left hand side of the front cover there is text, a list of the “45 new movies you need to know about”, below this is a list of 6 movie titles, Harry Potter being in bold in comparison to the rest of the titles. This draws the readers attention in order to help promote the film.
