A target audience is a specific group of people within the target market at which a product or the marketing message of a product is aimed at
I made sure I stook to my preferred target audience through out all of my planning and creating of my products. I new it was important to keep this in mind when creating my products.
I kept to my chosen target by the consistent colour choices and moderm day music choices.
Early in the year I was given Feedback on my pitch.
Class mate 1: I really like the concept of the trailer along with the idea and like the cancer twist it has. Class mate 2: I like the idea for the film it seems to be very devolped so will have a lot of ideas what to include in the trailer. Looking at insperational texts really helped her devolp her story and her ideas. Class mate 3: I like the idea its very unique and interesting. Well thought through and the insperations link in well with her idea. Good music choices because they reflect the theme of the trailer. Class mate 4: It looks like its aimed at only female. Its sounds very dramaitc which is good thing and the music choices will have good impact on the trailer. Teacher Feedback My teach said my idea is very well thought out and sounds like it has good potenial. He said I have researched my insperations well and took into consider the similar things from these which i would like to include in my trailer. My teacher wrote some questions for my to answer after watching my pitch so underneath is the questions and answers.
My friend gave my somefeedback on my film poster and magazine and she felt about being the model so i videoed her and posted it below.
The class looked around everyones work, The trailer and both print tasks and gave use some feedback. You can see this below.
I also got given feedback from my teacher which helped me improve my trailer and both print tasks. I have included these in image form below.
Over the last year my progress has improved majorly and this is reflected in my work. I have came up with a list of things which demonstrates this and expalined why I feel I have improved on that area.
Quality of images
The quality of images I have used in my product has improved highly in the second year of my media course. Looking back at last year (first picture, left) you can see it doesn't look half as professional and has good quaility of the this years images (second picture, right). This was down to lack off equipement and resources. In the firsr year I had little knowledge of how I wanted my images to look and how to take a good image. I also used a basic digital camera and a white wall im my house. This doesn't even comapre to this year where I used a professioanl photography studio and camera. This year I also had a large idea of how I wanted my images to look and this was reflected in the quality of images I came out with.
Magazine Front Covers
This year I learnt that less is more when creating a magazine. I also had a lot more knowledge of what a magazine layout included and how it looks and that you didnt need a lot on your magazine for it to look professional. Comparing this years product to last years, I feel that personally this years looks miles more professional and I could see more chance of it been sold in a shop. I looked at many insperational texts in order to help create my product this year which gave me many ideas of what I wanted my magazine to look like, this is something I didnt do last year. I would also like to compare the font usage on my first yeras work compared to the second. In the first year I thought including more different styles would make my product look better when infact now I realise it looks like a lot to read and take it and would probably have looked better with less.
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of media products?
First I am going to compare my print tasks to professional media products to develop and challange the ways my product looks. Firstly I am going to look at my film magazine. I am going to compare my media magazine to the well known professional film magazine 'Empire'. I will do this by using a variety of different media techniques.
My Film Magazine
The Masthead.
Both mastheads on the magazine are in a bright color
and in a big bold font making the very noticeable making them easy to
read.Although my models head is
covering part of the magazine name it is still clear to read and stands out
well. I created my magazine with the intention that even though part of the
title is covered my product is so well known people will still easily know what
magazine it is. The name ‘On Screen’ fits in well with the
genre of magazine as it automatically suggests film.My masthead stands out well to the audience.
My masthead fits in conventions of a professional magazine.
The Website
I put a website on my magazine as this is a well known
convention of a film magazine nowadays. I put in a similar place to the
professional magazine but made sure it still stood out. I added this on as
people can find out more about the magazine as nowadaysit is very common people going online to do
this as technology is getting better and better so the website will be visited
a lot more.
The main Image
The main image on my magazine is very clear and telling
the genre of the film I'm advertising on the front cover of my magazine. The
models eye line is looking straight into the audience engaging them. The model
is posing in a very confident way perhaps showing a side to her character in
the film. It is very conventional to have a main character on the front of the
magazine as they are the most well-known and people normally buy magazine if
they see a well known actor as they are interested in there lifestyle. Also
people can relate if they recognize the actor on the front of the magazine. Promotion code
Adding the element of two free posters to the front
cover is engaging the audience to buy the magazine as they get free products.
The posters in my magazine are posters from my film just like the professional
magazine. They are adversities with a big bold font which catch the readers
eyes. They work like a promotion code drawing people in to buy the magazine.
Main image
The main sell line is the second thing the readers will
notice. My fits the appropriate conventions as it is big and bold and stands
out well on the front cover. My main sell line is the films name, with a quote
from the main actor below.
Clothing
The models clothing is quite old fashioned and quite
sixties meaning we get an idea how the time set of the film. The hair makeup
and jewellery the model is wearing also helps with this. We get an idea that
the film will be quite old fashioned and be set in the olden days. This is a good conventions of a media
magazine as it is telling us about the film but not in a obvious way.
Sell Lines
My sell lines meet the same critiera as the professional magazine. They are they to tell you what extra things will be inside the magazine aswell as the main sell line. I liked the idea of the big plus sign so I used this on my poster. I liked it because its a clear sign that there is added extras inside the magazine and people will be aware of this straight away. I chose to put my plus sign red to it will stand out on the back ground and fit in well with the rest of the colour scheme. I postioned my sell lines where I did so that the left side of magazine front cover didnt look overly plain although i didn't want it to look like there was an overload of information of my front cover.
Banner
For the Banner on my magazine I wanetd to try and keep it plain and simple. I wanted it to stand out from the other parts on the front cover so I added a black background to the border to make the white text stand out. I stuck to the conventions of a professional magazine as I used this spaice to talk about other things included in the magazine. I put a banner and the top and bottom of the front cover.
Date and Price
The date and price is an important convention on any magazine. The readers need this to know what issue of the product they are buying and how much they are going to be paying for the magazine. Just like the insperational text I was using I put this information in a very small text and hid it away where it wasnt that noticeable.
Overall I am very happy with my film magazine and feel it looks professional.
My Film Poster
For my Film poster I used the well known film ' The Notebook' as my inspiration. I really like the notebooks film poster as it tells a love story by just looking at it. This is exactly what I hoped i have achieved with my poster. Underneath is the comparison of both posters.
The arrows shows the parts of my poster which as very similar to 'The Notebooks' film poster. Unlike the notebook I wanted all focus of the two main characters so I wanted to keep the background plain. The clothing my models are wearing also gives an idea about the personality, for example a bright spotty shirt could connote big bright bubbly personality. I wanted the olden days feel to my poster just like my film magazine so I dressed my model like this and done the hair and makeup the same keeping a consistent feel to all three of my products.
My poster has a good sense of story to it. The characters body language, holding each other, smiling and looking into eachothers eyes, automatically tells readers that its a love story but what isnt obvious is the cancer element. I wanted this so be an inner story line, just like the notebook does.
I liked the idea of ths smaller 'The' above the bigger section of the sister. I feel that this emphasises the rest of the title. I called my film 'The Final Mile' as its a pun. My film is about 2 people meeting at a race track doing something they love which is sport and running and then the girls gets cancer and the idea of the final mile is like the last moments of her life but then this links in with the last mile of a race. I like the title of my film as it doesn't give anything away.
The quote at the top of the page 'Pain Is Temporary, Quitting Lasts Forever' has a deep meaning behind it. It makes the audience think about what it could mean, obviously I know its about the fact the girl gets cancer and she will never give up but the audience dont know this till they have seen the film which will engage them into wanting to see the film. I liked the positioning of the quote in 'The Notebooks' poster so I put mine here as-well. Although its going over the actors head I put it in a color and font which still makes it stand out and clear to read.
I knew it was important to add a release date on my poster as people need to know when the film they are interested in is going to be coming into cinema's. Like 'The Notebook' I put mine at the bottom off the poster below the credits and in a large font as this is the third most important piece of information on the poster. I chose the color pink for the main title and the release date as this connaotes love and happiness and I wanted the audience to realize this. I added my film company logo I created as readers will know which company created the film and also my film website and Facebook page so people can get involved themselves.
My Trailer
For my trailer comparison I chose to use the Dear John trailer. I chose this trailer as I loved the editing, music and the way the whole trailer flowed. I also gave my trailer a natural, believable story line in which many people could relate too. Take a look at the trailer below then look at mine. I have put them both below.
I have created a video of my self talking about my product and compared it to 'Dear John'. The video is below.

I also looked at the typical conventions of a romance trailer and after looking at my insertional texts numerous times i came up with a list and looked at my work to see if my work challenged or supported them.
Narrative The couple meet and fall in love, but there is someone who disagrees. There is a typical feud, and they break up. Stock Characters A boy and a girl. Usually the boy isn’t ‘good enough’ for the girl. The parents who generally disagree. The girl is usually the one who is well off. Themes Love Settings Somewhere romantic at some point. Always in well off areas. Iconography Dresses, the stream. Birds and flowers. Relaxing music Filmic Techniques
High key lighting, when things are good. Low-key lighting when things go wrong. Bright colours are used in the girl’s clothes, and the boy has dull colours. Lots of close up to show the expressions of their faces. A lot of 2 shots are used.
I feel that may work supports all of these conventions and everything really fits in with the genre of romance. Obviously my trailer your typical love story as someone dies of cancer so it doesn't fit exactly to the list i came up with but taking the cancer part aside it really does.
2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Throughout my making off all my I tried my best to keep a consistent look. My poster and magazine link in well my trailer. I kept it consistent by using the same actors, same hair and makeup, same clothing, same style and same period of time for the setting. I wanted them all link in together. View my slide share below. Another way I done this was by adding website addresses to all three products. This would allow readers and viewers to all go on websites which link everything together. This is a professional convention of any new film and this happens in al professional products that get produced. The fact i used the same actors also helped as the audience can relate to the characters and start getting to know them. Any professional film made in Hollywood, such as my example of twilight demonstrates this.
Showing evidence of websites on all three products.
I made sure there was a clear relationship between my print tasks and trailer. Below you see see how the colours in my trailer link in well with my film poster and how i tried to keep it consistent. The two main colours used overall were grey and pink.
The romance genre is clearly represented through out all three tasks. In my trailer this is represented by the use of voiceovers, text and shot types. Below you can an example of the type of shots in my trailer that clearly represent the romance genre.
Below is examples of text which also clearly represents romance in my trailer.
Looking at my film poster the main elements of romance is demonstrated by the main image. The body language and facial expressions clearly represent love and I feel this is made very clear to the audience. You can see this my film poster above.
3. What have you learned from your audience feedback? I asked my audience what they thought of my products.
My Trailer.
Here is a link to my trailer just incase you haven't seen my finished product. Click Here For My Trailer Firstly I got given written feedback and video feedback from one of the main characters in my trailer. I asked Catherine as she as around the age for my target audience so i felt she was an appropriate candidate to choose. Catherine Lamb -
"As well as what I said in the video feedback I thought I would
add in some more written feedback for Jayne. I liked how the film trailer wasn’t
too long meaning when you were watching it you didn’t get bored and stayed engaged
at all times. There was also the conventional element of the release date
towards the end of the trailer after the credits. I told Jayne I felt this was
important as people want to know when the film they want to see is out.I got really into the voice overs in the
trailer as they really told the story behind Jayne’s trailer and you knew how
in love the two characters were by what they were saying. As well as this the fact she used 4 different songs
and blended them all together was quite effective as it gave the trailer a bit
of variety and difference. You automatically
knew who the two main characters where in the trailer which was good as you
knew who the main story was going to be based on and you met them and got a
feel of what they were like. Jayne had her film company logo at the beginning
of her trailer. I watched 3 other Hollywood trailers and noticed that this
happened on these ones as well so this was a good professional conventional
element to her trailer!"
My Film Poster
For the purpose of my media, I decided to ask someone who wasn't of my target audience what they thought of my film poster. I decided to ask someone of an older audience as I wanted to see if this had an impact on the feedback which would he given. I asked my mam over all what she thought on my overall trailer then asked her to give written feedback for me on some of the media conventions of a professional film poster.
Amanda Dowell -
"Jaynes poster is very eye catching and captivating to the audience. Like I said in the video it has a focal picture which automatically catches the readers eye. In jaynes poster her title 'the final mile' is positioned in big pink text which stands out on the plain back ground which is very easy to see and read which is every important with a film poster. The poster clearly defines the films genre and she does this by the main image and color scheme. She meets some important conventions of a film poster such as the release date and company logo. jaynes tagline/quote is very inspiring short and remember able which is good as the readers will remember this meaning they will remember her film. It's also important her poster shows the two main characters as people want to know who they are going to be watching. The body language and eye contact of the characters automatically shows us the characters are in love which shows off the genre of the film. A good film poster in my eyes!"
My Film Magazine
For my film poster i asked lots of different groups of friends there opinion on my film poster. I asked people from the target audience that I aimed my trailer at and was very interested to see what they would say. I asked them all look at it and give me feedback which i could transfer onto a presentation. I used a variety of boys and girls to get a fair varied opinion range.
Click here for a link to see my prezi with all my feedback on.
Below is written feedback off my class mates on Film Trailer and print tasks. To do this we all moved round the class looking at each others work and leaving feedback.
From my feedback from audience feedback I have learned a lot about my own products. I made me feel far better and confident about my products as they gave me a lot of good feedback. By asking a different audience range I feel it helped with variety of feedback given and gave me a chance to take on board feedback from different age groups.
The bits of feedback helped me identify the strengths and weaknesses of not only my work but also my skills in media. I now know that perform stronger using photoshop which is demonstrated from from my actual work and my feedback, rather than using premiere pro. I also feel that I wouldn't be as confident about my work if i hadn't had the feedback i had been given. 4. How did you use new media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages? In the making of my three products I used a variety of media programs. These included:
Adobe Premiere Pro is a timeline-based video editing software application.
Adobe Photoshop is a graphics editing program developed and published byAdobe Systems.
Both programmes above helped me create my products to a high standard. They both have a variety of special effects and editing software which I have demonstrated in the process of creating my three product.
Iphone 4s Voice Recorder
Adobe Photoshop
Abode Premier Pro
To track my progress of my full media coursework I am using blogger. You can use blogs for everything from updating your friends and family about your life, giving your own advice column, discussing your political views, or relating your experience in a topic of interest which in this case is my main product of my trailer. It allowed me to keep up to date with everything and put all my posts in a chronological order. This helped me organise everything making it easy for me to understand but also the examiner. Using Photoshop helped me achieve a more professional and believable look to my two print tasks The tools and resources on here available largely helped with the development of my two products. The photoshop tool bar gives you a list of tools which will help you gain a professional look to your products. I used the tool bar very frequently when designing my product. I used the text tool regularly as i was always adding sell lines mastheads and information to my product. I also used the rubber, fill tool and blur tool a lot when creating my two print tasks. You can see the tool bar below.
The chance to use premier pro allowed me to created a professional looking trailer which is suitable my target audience. This programme played a huge role and will have a impact on the grade i will achieve at the end of the year. This programme allowed you to add elements to your trailer which a professional trailer would use. These include sound edits, fades between sciences, adding in titles etc. Look below at the tools available when creating your trailer.
Below is a slide share which i created about the technology used in the making.
Me using the Imac computers in the process of making my products.
I also created a facebook page which allowed me to get in contact easily with my actors. I created this on facebook and called it 'Jazz Film Productions' which my compay I created my self. This is classed as another form of media used in the process of making my three products.
Also in this question I am going to be exploring the progress I have made compared to last years previous work. I obviously have a lot more knowledge and experience with photoshop now so this allowed me to create a much stronger product. Take a look at my last years magazine below.
From looking at last years work to now I
a huge devolvement in my Photoshop skills by how realistic and professional
this years product looks compared to last year. The layout and image use this
year captivates a much more professional look compared to the chosen image last
year. Although I was more than happy with my product last year I would change
some thing such as the sell lines on the front cover, the layout of the overall
contents page and the colour choices on the double page spread. I feel I could
of used much more inviting colours through out the full product which would
have drawn in the readers more. I feel that on the contents page I tried to add
to much information to it which may result in readers not wanting to carry on
reading my product.
